Happy Solstice!
Okay, so it’s a couple days late, but happy solstice everybody!
The diet continues to go well. I think I can say now that I’ve lost 25 lbs since I started this crazy ride around the beginning of April. It’s been a pretty steady 2 lbs a week so far. And lately I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting really hungry whereas I wasn’t so much before, even after cutting my portions to something more reasonable. I think maybe my metabolism may be speeding up. w00t!
In other news, I think I finally got Apache/PostgreSQL/PHP on ye old iBook all compiled tonight. I don’t remember it being such a pain in the butt last time on the Cube, though. Compiling the packages is pretty easy … as long as it’s configured properly right out of the archive. So far with OS X, it seems a lot of the open source utilities have to have the makefile tweaked or something in order to have it compile successfully.
Compare that to this afternoon when I started building a FreeBSD box at work and was using FreeBSD ports to install cvsup-without-gui. It downloaded all the dependencies and compiled them automagically without any fuss. Hopefully there’ll be a comparable free alternative for OS X at some point; I don’t think fink or Darwin Ports can rival FreeBSD Ports yet,at least not when it comes to the breadth of available software. Nevertheless, I seem to have my head around compiling stuff manually, and if I run into problems, a little googling will find the solution.
But it’s still a pain. :P
Anyway, there’s still some configuration left to do on PostgreSQL, PHP and Apache, but once that’s all sorted out to my satisfaction, I’m home free.
Much to learn…
